STEP-UP
Project: WILD C.I.C. are offering five short courses until March 2027, as part of the STEP-UP initiative with Better Connect, funded by The Mayoral Combined Authority’s Skills Innovation Fund.
These bite-sized courses are free to adults over 18 in York and North Yorkshire, who wish to re-engage with education, learn practical skills, gain confidence, and build community. Held in small, supportive groups, our STEP-UP courses weave digital learning, numeracy and literacy into hands-on activities, inspiring participants to pursue further opportunities in these sectors.
Animal Care
Meet all our animals and select 1 or 2 to work closely with. Learn about their biology, behaviour and preferred environmental conditions. Carry out daily care checks including feeding and habitat checks. Record and interpret health data. Research and present a care plan.

Upcycling Challenge
Everyone in the group will purchase an item from a charity shop, upcycle the item, keep track of the budget, and learn how to use e-commerce platforms effectively to advertise and sell the items. You will be supported in developing skills in DIY and look at sustainability.

Campfire Cooking
Get out into nature and work together to prepare meals over campfires. Learn some recipes, calculate portion costs to help with everyday budgeting and share ideas for healthier cooking, while enjoying the mental health benefits of time spent in green spaces.

Surveying and Habitat Management
Explore different habitat types and their ecological importance; learn basic land management techniques such as observation, recording and planning; understand the role of humans in maintaining healthy ecosystems; practice mapping and measuring using accessible tools.

Gardening
Try some eco-gardening techniques such as planting for pollinators & looking after the soil. Familiarise yourself with horticultural & taxonomical terms. Observe and record the wildlife that visits. Consider Health & Safety in the garden.
