Environmental Leadership Programme

For young people aged 15-21.

Young people are more disconnected from nature than ever, however general polls suggest that environmental challenges are a key interest and priority for those same young people. They understand that declining biodiversity is a significant problem and want to tackle it, accessing vast amounts of information about the challenges and solutions through social media, but most lack the knowledge, support and means to tackle the problem. The Environmental Leadership Programme aims to support these young people to be the change they wish to see, nurturing and developing their ideas with support from ecologists, key stakeholders and with financial backing to make them a reality.

To keep this programme 100% free for our Environmental Leaders, and to ensure their social action projects have adequate budget pots, we rely on funding from local and national sources – and we’re aways looking for other collaborative opportunities! Whether you’re an organisation looking to run an Environmental Leadership programme with us, or you’re just in the know of a fund or grant that you think would fit the bill, drop us an email!

We deliver a 5-day intensive Environmental Leadership Programme for young people aged 15 – 21.

During the course we dive deep into

Youth Led Environmental Social Action Projects

Upon completion of the Environmental Leadership Training Programme, we support the Environmental Leaders to develop and realise their ambitions for local environmental projects, with a budget available to each group and ongoing support from our staff and the involvement of relevant stakeholders. The projects, including their intended outcomes and measurable success, will be planned and executed by the Environmental Leaders with expert support. Projects will all be environmentally focused and are likely to include local green space improvement and community outreach.

Current Environmental Leadership Training Programmes

We’re currently running an Eco-Leaders programme that will start with our Schools Go WILD! project, visiting 1000 young people, from primary school through to college, across Brayton, Drax, and surrounding areas, and talk to them about the wonders of their local eco-system and how they can contribute to a better planet for all.

In the Easter holidays (7th April 2025 – 11 April 2025), we’ll be running our Environmental Leadership programme at the Skylark Centre – we can’t wait! The Summer holidays see us diving into their social action projects, alongside another ELT programme at Brayton Community Centre.

Barlby High and Carlton Holy Family School

The National Lottery Community Fund made our pilot course possible. Through their funding, we ran a small-scale Environmental Leadership Training course followed by social action projects. Students from Barlby High and Carlton Holy Family School successfully completed a nature pond, produced a card game about sustainable fishing, and planted a wildflower and herb garden.
